Small tanneries turn to shared effluent plants to stay open

A cluster model in Jajmau is helping smaller units meet discharge norms without the capital cost of building treatment capacity of their own.

Fourteen small tanneries in Jajmau have signed on to a shared effluent arrangement that lets them route discharge through a common treatment line.

For units operating on thin margins, building individual treatment capacity has never been realistic. The shared model splits both the capital cost and the running cost across members.

The economics of compliance

Operators said the arrangement has already cut their per unit compliance cost by roughly a third, though the plant is running close to capacity during peak months.

The cluster is looking at a second line, contingent on a subsidy decision expected later this year.
