Kanpur Electricity Supply Company Limited is preparing a major expansion of the city’s power distribution network, with six new 33/11 kV substations planned to address rising electricity demand, overloading and repeated tripping in several parts of Kanpur. The projects were proposed for inclusion in a programme involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but as of August 17, 2026, no official announcement confirming a date for the proposed foundation-laying ceremony was found in the sources reviewed for this report.
The proposed KESCO projects are part of a wider effort to strengthen Kanpur’s electricity infrastructure. Recent government records show that work is moving ahead on several network-strengthening projects, including new substations, feeder bifurcation and additional AB cable circuits.

Six new substations are planned across Kanpur
According to a June report by Amar Ujala, KESCO plans to establish six new substations at Pokharpur, New Ispat Nagar in Dada Nagar, Sakarapur-Hanspuram, Pashupati Nagar, the Parag Dairy area of Govind Nagar and Kidwai Nagar Site-1. The report said land had been identified for all six projects.
Three of the projects were already reported to be under construction at the time: Pokharpur, New Ispat Nagar in Dada Nagar and Sakarapur-Hanspuram. The proposed Dada Nagar substation is planned with a capacity of 20 MVA and is expected to strengthen electricity supply to the industrial area.
The six projects have been reported at an estimated combined cost of around Rs 40 crore. The same report said the substations could directly benefit about 50,000 consumers and help reduce overloading, tripping and faults once they become operational.
Why the announcement matters for Kanpur electricity consumers
Kanpur’s distribution network is facing growing demand from residential areas as well as the city’s industrial zones. Adding substations closer to load centres can allow KESCO to redistribute demand instead of relying heavily on existing overloaded infrastructure.
For consumers, the practical objective is better network reliability. New substations can provide additional transformation capacity and allow feeders to be reorganised, potentially reducing the pressure that contributes to tripping and faults. The benefits will depend on the completion and commissioning of the projects, so the proposed announcement should not be confused with immediate improvement in supply.
The Dada Nagar project is particularly relevant to Kanpur’s industrial belt. The June report said the planned 20 MVA substation could support around 2,000 factories in the area by improving the local electricity network.
Government records show wider KESCO network work is underway
The six-substation plan is not an isolated project. UPPCL’s annual report for 2024-25 says a special urban distribution strengthening project for Kanpur under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme has an approved outlay of Rs 740.17 crore. The project includes modernization, smart technologies and system augmentation, with implementation and survey activities reported to be in progress.
Recent entries on the Uttar Pradesh government’s e-procurement portal also show KESCO continuing to award and process infrastructure work. These include construction of a 33/11 kV, 2×5 MVA substation at the STP campus in Jajmau, feeder bifurcation at multiple substations and the laying of additional AB cable circuits on several feeders.
The government tender portal currently shows the Jajmau substation project under financial evaluation. A separate KESCO tender for additional AB cable circuits across 12 feeders has also moved through the technical evaluation stage, while another tender covers feeder bifurcation at six 33/11 kV substations.
Foundation stone date is still the key detail to watch
The June reports said the six KESCO substations had been proposed for inclusion in a Prime Ministerial foundation-stone and inauguration programme in Kanpur. One report described the visit as proposed, while another said the foundation-laying was being prepared as part of the planned visit.
However, a confirmed ceremony date is not available in the official sources reviewed for this article as of August 17, 2026. The Prime Minister’s Office’s current published tour information reviewed for this report does not provide confirmation of a Kanpur event for these KESCO substations.
This distinction is important for consumers. The projects themselves are supported by KESCO’s ongoing tender activity and the wider UPPCL distribution-modernisation programme, but the timing of any public announcement, foundation ceremony or commissioning schedule remains subject to official confirmation.
What Kanpur residents should expect
- Six new KESCO substations are planned at identified locations across Kanpur.
- The projects are intended to address increasing load, overloading, tripping and local network faults.
- The Dada Nagar project is planned as a 20 MVA substation serving the industrial area.
- Other proposed locations include Pokharpur, Sakarapur-Hanspuram, Pashupati Nagar, the Parag Dairy area of Govind Nagar and Kidwai Nagar Site-1.
- Separate KESCO works are already progressing through the government tender system, including feeder bifurcation, AB cable work and substation construction.
- No confirmed date for the proposed Prime Ministerial foundation-laying event was found in the official sources reviewed as of August 17, 2026.
How consumers can check official KESCO updates
Residents should rely on KESCO and UPPCL notices for confirmation of any foundation-stone ceremony, construction milestone, commissioning date or consumer-level change. The Kanpur Nagar district administration lists KESCO’s 24-hour service number as 1912 and its Kanpur headquarters at Kesa House, 14/71 Civil Lines.
For electricity faults and service-related complaints, consumers can use the 1912 service. The district administration’s official KESCO page also provides the utility’s website information.
For now, the most significant development is that Kanpur’s distribution network is continuing to undergo expansion and strengthening. The six proposed substations are part of that larger programme, but residents should wait for an official notice before treating any reported announcement date as final.
